Granite Bay resident Geraldine Anders, founder of FabiKins, eco-friendly napkins, hopes to encourage green living with her home-based business. Her napkins are made of bamboo, which is a renewable material.

Going green can be as simple as recycling soda cans, using eco-friendly paint or reducing paper napkin use.

Granite Bay resident Geraldine Anders knows this. That’s why her goal is for families to reduce their paper napkin use completely by using napkins that are just about as green as they come.

Through her company, FabiKins, a registered trademark, Anders has designed eco-friendly napkins made from bamboo, certified and tested not to contain harmful substances. And they use organic cotton grown with low-impact methods and no harmful pesticides.

In addition to the environmentally friendly aspect of the napkins is the versatility, effectiveness and the personalization.

According to Anders, FabiKins can be used for kids’ lunches, taken on picnics, used as washcloths, soaked in water and used as a wet cloth and given as gifts. And because bamboo is so absorbent, the napkin works well for keeping kids’ hands clean. In fact, bamboo is four times more absorbent than cotton, Anders said, which serves a napkin’s purpose.

FabiKins also appeals to kids and adults with the personalized touches. The napkins can be monogrammed, initialed or have a detail design on them.

Sarah Jenkins of Granite Bay has been using FabiKins for about a year now as dinner napkins and in her children’s lunches. Jenkins said her FabiKins get used daily by her family and she knows the benefits.

“I’m not wasting, but I also love them because they’re so soft,” she said.

Jenkins said she’s also found the napkins to be long-lasting and easy to clean by throwing them in the washer and dryer with the rest of the laundry.

With Anders’ product, she doesn’t just promote green living to others, she actually instills it into her daily routine.

“The smallest endeavors make a big impact,” she said. “When you start small, it inspires you to look at other areas.”

As a mother of two, Anders is dedicated to trying to set a good, green example for her children. She said she has dramatically reduced her paper napkin and paper towel use, she uses natural ingredient cleaning supplies, has a compost barrel in her backyard and of course, she recycles.

Much of her greenness has also spilled over into her company philosophy to live planet-friendly every day. In almost every way possible, Anders uses eco-friendly products to run her business. Her business cards are made from 100 percent recycled paper, her printer ink is soy ink, which is less polluting than traditional petroleum-based ink, the napkins are sold wrapped in recycled tissue paper with a raffia tie, scraps of fabric are used to create smaller double-sided baby wash towels and the FabiKins product tags are made from recycled paper as well.

“It takes an effort to be green,” Anders said.

But she’s up for the challenge and is bringing others on board as well. Her FabiKins will be featured in an upcoming book, “Green Christmas: How to Have a Joyous, Eco-Friendly Holiday Season,” as green gifts for the holidays.

Anders also makes it a company priority to give back to the community. FabiKins is sponsoring a Folsom Lake Beals Point clean-up on Oct. 5 and supports The Sacramento Children’s Home Guild, has been involved in the Green Aware Fair and the Nature Conservatory.

Being a stay-at-home mom, Anders said she represents a lot of other mothers who are starting up their own business and are becoming more eco-conscious, which she calls “the green mom movement.” Because Anders believes it’s never too late to start living planet-friendly.

“You’re never too old to be green,” she said.
